Ui CULTURE EVENT

I’m aware that in this new day and age, there have been huge dynamic changes in the social world that we currently live in. It’s the new fad of life and either you accept it or try to work against the odds. A new generation of millennials are changing the ways of how we foresee our integrity of what’s expected to what’s earned.

Millennials that will buy into just about anything now a days, elude the basis of a respectable work ethic amongst our new way of living; where the new trend is to find fame within a short amount of time by way of marketing oneself with a common follower or number count.

Myspace was once the hookup grounds for young singles which then turned into a platform for emerging artist. Facebook is a cocktail of airing dirty laundry, social and political debates; and Jerry Springer arguments. Twitter is a nest full of birds. Then there’s Instagram being a narcissistic lovers lane while passing off the simplest photo as art depending on the filter while everything else appears to be an add on. Although my distaste for the “new way of life” which ultimately has me torn between, if you can’t beat them, then…ugh…suck up your pride to join them, I still haven’t lost all hope for our future.

Last week, I attended an event for the launch of a new app, that made its way into my Facebook invites by an acquaintance. Because it wasn’t the formal way that I’d like to receive any type of invite for a quote on quote “Invite only”, I took my chances and rsvped. Whomever was on the the other end of the email was extremely diligent in responding back to me so that way I knew I’d be confirmed. I was given the opportunity of including myself with media which is not necessarily my forte, but I thought I’d give it a go which in turn put another number into my blessing counts.

The event was being held at the TLC Chinese Theater, mainly known for celebrity hand prints and comical walking leotards.

We were greeted by a lovely woman, Kelly, who pointed Lauren, TheLeauxProjec, and I in the direction of the media post where my name was among other shutter bugs waiting to take photos of celebrities that would be arriving. In the midst of a minor splish splash in this unpredictable California weather, we were given pamphlets of all the celebrity guest who would be walking the purple carpet such as, Evan Ross, Ashlee Simpson, Mel B, Kat Dennings, Orlando Jones and Gary Marshall, just to name a few. Only problem was, that we couldn’t even depict a handful of those that actually showed up. After befriending two other bloggers, Carmen from, WantedandDesired and Cherry, who too seemed at odds with the media perception, we soon realized we were out of our elements and it ended up being an open invitation for a free for all and any given fame seekers to get their tid bit mark in front of the camera lenses. While we were not amused feeling as if we were common onlookers or teeny boppers, we started to make our way towards the venue.

Before walking away, these two handsome devils caught our attention as they oozed an aura of talent. Not necessarily because I knew who they were, but after seeing how we each did a °360 turn in sync when one of them walked by, I knew that they were something to look out for. With all due respect to credits of those trying to keep a relevance, but we were expecting people with a little more years of prestige to the world we’re accustomed to.

We made our way inside the venue to check in, first knocking the photo booth out of the way.

I’m addicted to photo boothing

After I got my feel of vanity, I noticed a waiter walking by carrying a tray of Hors d’oeuvres. I quickly followed him shadowing his every move before he made his way up the stairs knowing I wouldn’t stand a chance among the other guest. The VIP was exclusively set up for media and celebrities alike who were under the impression of testing out the new product that might change social media as it is today. The room was long, dark and narrow with padded walls of claustrophobia. Any ounce of breathing space would become limited once more people were to arrive. Carmen and I chose to start off with the open bar until I recognized this gorgeous face from the red carpet. First thing I thought of was K-pop; and I quickly striked up a conversation about his edgy style.

Yeah he’s a heart breaker

And quite the flirt too. Come to find out the other guy who walked the same carpet with him just so happens to be his identical twin who both are popular on YouTube, Vine and Instagram. Well I’ll be. What makes them stand out is the overall longevity and potential I see them having in their career of acting where they respectably use social media as a platform. They’re extremely cute, talented and unfortunately too young; and although I have my strong opinions, I still say to watch them as their careers manifest to much driven success.

Shortly after, Evan Ross got on the microphone to introduce himself and the product to the audience. Only having the understanding of there being a new app, we watched the multiple screens to watch what appeared to be a commercial or reel of real life people in the real world and what could transpire by involving yourself with the Ui Culture app.

image

Well that’s the question. What is the Ui Culture? Is it another platform like that of Facebook or Myspace? Is it a virtual community that allows people to respond to others ambitions and goals? Or is it a channel like that of YouTube to showcase who you truly are and what you have to offer to our world?

image

Is it a new innovation to what already is and what we continue to see today? A way to give light to all the doubters, like myself, that our generation is made up of spoiled brats who are aggressively beginning to pave the way.

image

Is it a U and I brand becoming the ultimate culture? These are the questions that many of us find ourselves pondering where even those in support of this event couldn’t accurately answer with a mere insight.

After the viewing, doors were soon opened to the rest of the party guest attending the event with a center stage for performances by, Golden Hippie, Andy Mineo, Kenna and Dj Arty. Carmen and Cherry decided to leave early and Lauren and I stayed to make ourselves comfortable in the VIP lounge downstairs with our own private bar. A gargantuan guard made it practically impossible for anyone to enter until Kelly was kind enough to confirm our media status. I quickly made sure to make friends with the big guy so I could continue to keep my access open in order to come and go as I pleased. While waiting for my friend, artist and entertainer, Laquan, to arrive I wanted to make sure that we wouldn’t be hard to find, but after playing musical chairs at the request of a man and Evan marking his territory, we finally found a comfortable cushioned couch that wasn’t taken.

I wasn’t surprised nor star struck given that we’ve both been associated with the same social circle for a number of years before the Hollywood scene changed. In fact, It wasn’t that long ago that I attended another event he had hosted at the grand opening of the West Wood STK. Plus, his loyal friend and mine, Jazz and I were able to catch up. I got a sense that Evan clearly recognized me after crossing so many social paths, but I wasn’t sure if I were to say hi or congratulate him on the birth of his beautiful baby girl.

Welcome to the life of an introvert.

Performances started to make their way to the center stage, but there was one specific artist that took Lauren and I by major surprise. Andy Mineo. Call me outdated, but I’ve not heard of his music and clearly that wasn’t a factor by the way he created a mosh pit among all of his adoring followers and fans. In some way, there are certain elements to the hustle and fame I can’t deny in respecting.

image

I watched and observed a crowd form around him feeling like a curious thot and realized how easy it was for him to make that type of impression on me that I found admirable.

Laquan finally made his way inside which allowed him to get a feel for the purpose of the event beyond it just being another app. Lauren and I played on our phones scrolling through all the photos we had taken until I saw a sheek haircut on the face of a beautiful girl. Hold up… wait a minute. Is that Keke Palmer?!

image

Well where the heck was she as we waited for expected arrivals. We probably had left by that time, but knowing that she was in the same room was good enough.

The night was coming to an end and although I had my eye on one major eye candy that would send me on the train to Cougar Ville, I was ready to call it a night. Before making our way out, Laquan confessed an embarrassing mistake of confusing the head poncho and CEO of this app, Tyrone Davis, as a security guard. Even more embarrassing, he was the same guy moving me around even though he made sure to assure me that I’d be taken care of once the second vip section opened.

Though Laquan was semi humiliated, I just saw the humor in a common mistake and encouraged all of us to scoop up our dignities and approach the gentleman as a formal introduction. I was curious about the app only after getting a glimpse, but it wasn’t enough, so I asked. What is the Ui Culture, what’s the vision behind it; and what are we doing to cultivate the Ui Culture concept?

“It’s a secret”

image

Well there you have it. A mystery to leave us with until their next bit launch party, but in turn; are we the Ui Culture in this NEW URBAN and what does our culture represent for this next big thing?

We’ll just have to wait and see
